Former NFL MVP Matt Ryan has been appointed as the President of Football for the Atlanta Falcons. This announcement was made by team owner and chairman, Arthur M. Blank, on Saturday morning. Ryan will immediately take on this role, overseeing all football-related operations for the organization. He will report directly to Blank and work closely with Falcons President and CEO, Greg Beadles, to ensure cohesive management of both business and football aspects.

Matt Ryan’s Role and Responsibilities

With his new position, Ryan will be instrumental in the search for both a new head coach and general manager for the Falcons. These new hires will directly report to Ryan as he aims to strengthen the team’s operations.

Arthur Blank praised Ryan’s impressive history, highlighting his 14 years with the Falcons as a player, during which he became the franchise’s most successful athlete. “Matt’s leadership, attention to detail, and drive to win will significantly benefit our organization,” Blank said.

Background and Experience

Ryan, who had a fruitful 15-year NFL career, most recently served as a game and studio analyst for CBS Sports. His experience includes working with noted analysts such as Andrew Catalon and Tiki Barber. Over the past three years, he studied NFL strategies and dynamics closely, allowing him to acquire extensive knowledge of the league and sustain successful organizations.

“It’s great to be home,” Ryan stated upon accepting his new role early Saturday morning. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity while emphasizing his dedication to the team and the fans, stating his commitment remains unchanged despite his career shift.

Historical Achievements

During his time as a Falcons quarterback, Ryan led the team to five playoff appearances, including two NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl. He recorded numerous franchise records, such as:

  • Career Passing Yards: 59,735
  • Career Touchdowns: 367
  • Completion Percentage: 65.5%
  • Regular Season Record with Falcons: 120 wins, 102 losses (.541)

Ryan’s awards include being named the NFL MVP in 2016, and he holds the record for most passing yards by a player in their first 14 seasons.

Community Engagement

Beyond football, Ryan has made considerable contributions to the community. He was nominated for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award for his philanthropic efforts, including initiatives focused on healthcare and youth support. In conjunction with his wife, Sarah, he founded ATL: Advance the Lives, aimed at tackling systemic barriers to success for Black youth. Their efforts raised $1.3 million to support this cause.

As Ryan transitions to this leadership role, he acknowledges the challenges ahead but is optimistic about tapping into his previous experiences as a player and leader. “I’m ready for this opportunity,” he affirmed, predicting a promising future for the Falcons organization under his guidance.
