The Cincinnati Bengals faced substantial challenges last season, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2022. Their struggles continued even with star quarterback Joe Burrow in the lineup during the 2024 season. The team’s inconsistent performance can largely be attributed to significant issues on defense.

Defensive Performance Declines

Last year, the Bengals ranked 25th in points and yards allowed, leading to the dismissal of defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. This year, under new defensive coordinator Al Golden, the team’s defensive ranking plummeted to 30th in points allowed and 31st in yards allowed.

While the defense showed some improvement late in the season, limiting opponents to 24 points or less in five of the last six games, their overall performance remained lackluster. Furthermore, the defense lost key player Trey Hendrickson for ten games due to injury and contract disputes, further complicating their efforts.

Frustration Among Players and Fans

Bengals executive Duke Tobin expressed deep frustration over the team’s failure to meet expectations. “It was frustrating, it was challenging… It hurts us because we know the fans have high expectations,” he stated. The team is determined to improve and boost its performance as they head into the offseason.

Focus on Offseason Improvements

Tobin emphasized the need for roster enhancements, particularly on defense. He referred to the defensive talent as “emerging” but acknowledged the necessity to acquire impactful players. Additionally, there is a critical need to improve the offensive line, which ranked 28th according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).

Cap Space and Draft Opportunities

  • The Bengals currently possess $57.5 million in cap space.
  • They also hold eight draft picks for 2026, including the 10th overall selection.

With these assets, the Bengals have the opportunity to strengthen their roster significantly. Tobin remains optimistic, saying, “We can add to the team in a lot of different areas. It’s on us to make the right decisions.” However, the team will need to work diligently to convert its current potential into actual success on the field.
