The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence against protesters in Iran. The mission, which focuses on human rights violations, reports alarming revelations regarding the government’s crackdown on demonstrations that have lasted for three weeks.

Protests Sparked by Currency Collapse

Since the protests erupted on December 28, 2022, more than 46 cities across Iran have witnessed civil unrest. Initially triggered by the drastic fall of the national currency, the protests have led to serious confrontations between demonstrators and security forces.

Violence and Internet Disruptions

On January 8, 2023, authorities shut down internet and mobile connectivity, severely limiting access to information amid rising tensions. As of January 7, over 40 people, including at least five children, have reportedly lost their lives in different provinces such as Qom, Yasuj, Kermanshah, Ilam, and Lorestan. The Iranian parliament has acknowledged casualties among security personnel as well.

Call for Human Rights Respect

The Fact-Finding Mission emphasized that all individuals, including women, men, and children, deserve to exercise their rights peacefully. They condemned the oppressive measures enforced by the state, which include violence, intimidation, and repression of demonstrations.

The mission also highlighted that any military intervention by foreign entities would violate international law. It urged the Iranian government to uphold rights related to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, demanding the unconditional release of those held unjustly.

Concerns Over Brutality in Minority Regions

The Fact-Finding Mission raised alarms about excessive force used in ethnic minority areas, where responses have been particularly harsh. Reports included an incident in Ilam where security forces allegedly stormed a hospital, using tear gas and assaulting patients and healthcare workers.

Historical Context of the Crackdown

This recent crackdown mirrors previous events during the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests in 2022, triggered by the death of Jina Mahsa Amini. Amini was a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, arrested under allegations related to hijab regulations. Those protests similarly revealed systemic human rights abuses and demonstrated an atmosphere of impunity.

Mission’s Ongoing Role

Established by the UN Human Rights Council in 2022, the independent Fact-Finding Mission investigates alleged human rights violations linked to protests in Iran. The mission’s mandate was extended in April 2025 to further analyze ongoing severe violations, particularly those impacting women and children.
