Fresno State is navigating a challenging season, marked by a significant gambling scandal that erupted last year. Coach Vance Walberg became aware of this issue after receiving an anonymous tip about some of his players engaging in gambling activities.

The Scandal Unfolds

In October during Mountain West media day in Las Vegas, Walberg disclosed his decision to report the players involved. He prioritized transparency, informing his athletic director about the allegations. This led to suspensions for several players.

Key Players Involved

  • Mykell Robinson: Revoked eligibility and was the most active gambler.
  • Jalen Weaver: Also lost eligibility; currently plays professionally in Bosnia.
  • Steven Vasquez: Former teammate whose eligibility was also revoked.
  • Zaon Collins: Originally suspended but returned to play for the team.

The NCAA’s investigation revealed that both Robinson and Weaver used their smartphones for impermissible betting activities. Robinson particularly engaged in prop bets related to his performance, including a notable instance where he lost a five-leg parlay bet.

Betting Patterns and Consequences

Robinson’s betting strategies involved wagering on his own game statistics, including points and assists. His most significant bet occurred when he asked Vasquez to place a $200 prop bet, which eventually led to a winning payout of $1,450.

Both Robinson and Weaver confessed to their gambling activities. However, as of now, no criminal charges have been pressed against them. The scandal has raised concerns about the impact of gambling culture in college sports, particularly regarding prop bets, which Walberg and SDSU Coach Brian Dutcher criticized.

New Beginnings

The current season marks a fresh start for Fresno State basketball. With an entirely revamped roster, the team features international players from various countries, including France and Italy. Only Collins remains from the previous year’s squad.

Coach Walberg emphasized the need to move forward. Players, like junior guard David Douglas Jr., highlighted the importance of transitioning past the scandal and focusing on building a new team dynamic.

Looking Ahead

As Fresno State prepares to face San Diego State on Saturday, the team looks to regain its footing in the aftermath of the scandal. The players and coaching staff are determined to focus on the future as they navigate the challenges ahead.

Walberg expressed a strong desire to prevent such incidents in the future, wishing for a clean slate as the season progresses.
