The New England Patriots are gearing up for a pivotal Wild Card playoff clash against the Los Angeles Chargers. As part of their preparations, the team has elevated two players from the practice squad for the game.

Elevations Ahead of the Playoff Matchup

On Saturday, the Patriots announced the promotion of defensive tackle Leonard Taylor III and wide receiver Jeremiah Webb from their practice squad. This move comes as they prepare for Sunday night’s matchup at Gillette Stadium.

Player Profiles: Taylor and Webb

  • Leonard Taylor III: The defensive tackle has appeared in three regular-season games, providing depth in the interior defensive line. His performances include four total pressures and three run stuffs.
  • Jeremiah Webb: A rookie receiver, Webb is yet to make his NFL debut. Standing at 5-11 and weighing 198 pounds, he is known for his smooth route-running. In the preseason, he registered six catches for 80 yards, along with a touchdown.

Webb’s elevation comes at a critical time, especially after fellow wide receiver Kayshon Boutte was listed on the injury report due to a hamstring issue. This situation becomes more urgent as the Patriots are already without versatile receiver Mack Hollins, who is on injured reserve.

Current Receiver Situation

The Patriots are now left with just five active wide receivers: Stefon Diggs, Kyle Williams, DeMario Douglas, Efton Chism III, and Jeremiah Webb. If Boutte is unable to play, Webb’s presence will provide additional options for the offense, particularly for short and deep routes.

Kickoff Return Strategy

Webb has also shown potential as a return specialist, highlighted by a 59-yard kickoff return during the preseason. In recent games, Chism and running back D’Ernest Johnson have served as the primary kickoff returners, but Webb may carve a role in this aspect as well.

Defensive Line Adjustments

On the defensive side, the only player ruled out for the matchup against the Chargers is nose tackle Khyiris Tonga, who is dealing with a foot injury. Taylor III’s addition aims to strengthen the defensive line, as the team anticipates a busy night ahead.

Game Day Preparations

As kickoff approaches, the Patriots will need to declare seven players inactive 90 minutes before the game. The matchup against the Chargers is set for 8 p.m. ET on Sunday night at Gillette Stadium. The focus will be on monitoring Boutte’s status and how the elevations of Taylor and Webb will impact the team’s game plan.
