Italdesign Revamps Second-Gen Acura NSX to Echo Original Design
The second-generation Acura NSX, produced in Ohio, was known for its cutting-edge hybrid technology. This hybrid system combined a twin-turbo V-6 engine with three electric motors, setting a precedent for future supercars. Despite its innovative design, this model concluded its production without a direct successor.
Italdesign Introduces NSX Tribute
In a recent development, Italdesign has received approval from Honda to create the NSX Tribute. This updated version of the Acura NSX was officially unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon in Japan. Italdesign plans to manufacture a limited series of this vehicle, although it will only be available in right-hand drive, targeting the Japanese market where the NSX is branded as a Honda.
Design Features Inspired by the Original
While the Tribute is based on the second-generation NSX, several design elements pay homage to the first-generation model. Key features include:
- A new rear light graphic resembling the original model’s full-width bar.
- Motorized “eyelid” covers for the headlights, mirroring the pop-up headlights of earlier NSX versions.
Italdesign has also released a video showcasing the Tribute, featuring a driver dressed in white socks and loafers, reminiscent of Ayrton Senna’s iconic look during his early tests of the original NSX at Suzuka Circuit.
Celebrating Honda’s Milestones
The unveiling of the NSX Tribute coincides with several significant anniversaries for Honda: 60 years since their first Formula 1 race, 35 years since the launch of their first road car, and 30 years since an NSX took its class at Le Mans. The Tribute embodies Honda’s motorsport legacy, highlighted by features such as:
- “Championship White” paintwork.
- Race car-inspired Advan graphics.
- The red Honda badge typical of Type R models.
Interior and Pricing Details
While details of the Tribute’s interior are currently available only as renderings, they suggest a refreshing redesign that maintains the essence of the second-generation NSX. New color and trim options appear alongside an updated dashboard and instrument cluster.
Cost details for the NSX Tribute have not yet been disclosed. However, similar high-end restomods indicate that prices will likely be substantial. Additionally, potential buyers may also consider the Tensei, a collaboration with JAS Motorsport and Pininfarina, offering a reimagined version of the original NSX with carbon fiber bodywork.
The resurgence of interest in the NSX, through both Italdesign’s Tribute and other collaborations, highlights the enduring legacy and fan base of this iconic vehicle.
