Blue Jackets Appoint Rick Bowness as Head Coach, Release Evason and McCarthy
The Columbus Blue Jackets have officially named Rick Bowness as their new head coach, replacing Dean Evason and assistant coach Steve McCarthy. This decision was announced by Don Waddell, the team’s President of Hockey Operations and General Manager. Waddell expressed the disappointment surrounding the team’s performance this season and acknowledged the need for change.

Evason, who held the head coach position since July 22, 2024, had a record of 59 wins, 52 losses, and 16 overtime losses in 127 games. Under his leadership, the Blue Jackets had a 40-33-9 record last season and are currently in eighth place in the Metropolitan Division with a 19-19-7 record.
Bowness, at 70 years old, brings extensive experience to the Blue Jackets. His most recent role was with the Winnipeg Jets, where he achieved a 98-57-9 record over two seasons. He led the Jets to playoff appearances in each of those seasons. Previously, he coached the Dallas Stars, reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2020.
