PBS Cuts Weekend Newscasts, Introduces Single-Topic Programs Instead

PBS has made significant changes to its weekend programming following a notable reduction in funding. The decision comes after the federal government slashed $1.1 billion from public broadcasting budgets, impacting key broadcasts.

PBS Weekend Newscast Cancellation

This weekend marked the end of “PBS News Weekend,” the program that aired on Saturdays and Sundays. Anchor John Yang confirmed the conclusion of the newscast, stating it would be gone “at least for the foreseeable future.” The program, which began in 2013 and moved to Washington, D.C. in 2022, has averaged around 827,000 viewers per episode, significantly lower than the weekly “PBS NewsHour,” which garners close to 1 million more viewers.

Introduction of New Programs

In the wake of these changes, PBS is launching two new shows. Starting Saturday, the science-focused program “Horizons” will explore key issues in technology and science. It will be hosted by William Brangham.

On Sundays, “Compass Points” will delve into foreign affairs, hosted by Nick Schifrin. Both shows will be pre-recorded during the week, allowing PBS to operate with reduced weekend staff.

Impact of Funding Cuts

The funding cuts were implemented in response to the Republican-controlled Congress and President Donald Trump’s advocacy for reduced financial support for public broadcasting. The president has voiced concerns regarding perceived biases in news programming against conservative viewpoints.

  • Reduction of $1.1 billion from public broadcasting funding.
  • Cessation of “PBS News Weekend.”
  • Launch of “Horizons” (science and technology) and “Compass Points” (foreign affairs).
  • Both shows will be 30-minute segments.

Future of PBS Programming

In light of these changes, Sara Just, the senior executive producer for “NewsHour,” mentioned that the elimination of weekend broadcasts is not viewed as temporary. However, she remains optimistic about the future of weekday newscasts, indicating that PBS has adapted to new media platforms like TikTok and YouTube for increased visibility.

While PBS responds to these funding challenges, the introduction of specialized programs like “Horizons” and “Compass Points” highlights the network’s efforts to maintain quality journalism in a changing landscape.
