UK Launches ‘Town of Culture’ Contest to Celebrate Unique Stories
The UK government has launched a new initiative called the ‘Town of Culture’ contest. This event aims to complement the upcoming UK City of Culture program. Applications for the 2029 edition are now open, having been launched following the selection of Bradford as the 2025 City of Culture.
Details of the ‘Town of Culture’ Contest
This contest is part of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s broader initiative to instill pride throughout Britain. Towns across the UK can begin submitting their bids immediately. The most compelling candidates will be shortlisted for further evaluation.
Funding and Support for Shortlisted Towns
- Each shortlisted town will receive £60,000 in funding.
- The panel for the UK Town of Culture 2028 will be chaired by Sir Phil Redmond.
- Redmond emphasizes the contest’s purpose: to celebrate the unique qualities of each town.
Significance of the Contest
Redmond stated, “UK Town of Culture asks what makes your town special? What makes its people proud to be there? And why should that be celebrated?”
This initiative is a part of the government’s wider Pride in Place Programme, which was launched in November 2025. Under this program, the Labour government has pledged up to £10 billion in funding for 244 towns nationwide. The goal is to enhance community identity and encourage local pride.
