Bill Kreutzmann Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Bob Weir of Grateful Dead
Bill Kreutzmann, the drummer of the iconic band Grateful Dead, has paid a touching tribute to his late bandmate Bob Weir. This heartfelt message was shared through social media, reflecting on their long-standing friendship and musical journey.
Remembering a Legendary Friendship
Kreutzmann reminisced about first meeting Weir in the mid-1960s. At that time, Weir and Jerry Garcia were performing with a group called Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions. Kreutzmann noted, “Together, we embarked on a journey without a destination.” He described their early days without aspirations of fame or recognition, saying, “We didn’t set out to change the world…”
Early Experiences and Adventures
The early rehearsals took place in the back of a music shop, where Kreutzmann and Weir often shared moments outside of music. They would spend time in the alleyway, enjoying casual smoking sessions. Kreutzmann shared, “Bob and I were the younger guys in the band, so we liked to do weird shit. We just liked to play pranks and be silly.”
These playful antics continued as they navigated their careers, with Kreutzmann recalling times they threw water balloons at each other and later at tourist buses. “That didn’t end well, but it’s making me smile all these years later,” he said. “Every day felt like a great American adventure.”
A Lasting Legacy
Kreutzmann concluded his tribute by quoting lyrics from the Grateful Dead’s song “Bird Song.” He expressed the profound impact Weir had on his life since they were young. “So many people can say their life would not have been the same without Bob Weir. That’s been true for me since I was 17,” Kreutzmann stated. He emphasized that his love and appreciation for Weir would never fade.
Tributes to Bob Weir
Weir, who passed away at the age of 78, has received numerous tributes from fellow musicians and friends. Kreutzmann co-founded the band Dead & Company in 2015 alongside Weir, John Mayer, Mickey Hart, Oteil Burbridge, and Jeff Chimenti. In 2023, Kreutzmann left the group and was succeeded by drummer Jay Lane.
Dead & Company released an official statement on Weir’s death, and each member shared personal reflections to honor his legacy.
