Julio Iglesias Faces Human Trafficking Allegations from Ex-Staff
Julio Iglesias, the renowned Spanish singer, is under scrutiny following serious human trafficking allegations from two former employees. Advocacy groups, including Women’s Link Worldwide and Amnesty International, announced on Wednesday that the women will testify before prosecutors about their experiences. They claim to have faced sexual and emotional abuse while employed at Iglesias’s properties in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas in 2021.
Allegations of Human Trafficking and Abuse
The women, a domestic worker and a physiotherapist, filed a complaint with Spanish prosecutors on January 5, detailing incidents that could amount to human trafficking and sexual crimes. What they endured may qualify as forced labor and crimes against sexual freedom. Specific allegations include:
- Sexual harassment by Iglesias
- Monitoring their mobile phones
- Restrictions on their freedom to leave the residence
- Working hours of up to 16 hours daily without days off
Personal Testimonies
One of the accusers, Rebeca, a 22-year-old Dominican, stated her intention to speak out for justice and inspire other employees to raise their voices. She emphasized, “I want to tell them to be strong. Remember he is not invincible.”
Legal Framework and Investigation
Jovana Rios Cisnero, executive director of Women’s Link, confirmed that the complainants would soon testify before public prosecutors. The legal director for Europe, Gema Fernandez, explained that the complaint was filed in Spain to leverage the country’s legislation on gender-based violence, which may facilitate justice for the victims.
The public prosecutor’s office has a six-month period, extendable by another six months, to conduct a preliminary investigation. They will decide whether to dismiss the case or pursue further action.
Public Reaction
The allegations have sparked significant concern in Spain, where Iglesias is widely respected. Equality Minister Ana Redondo called for a comprehensive investigation. Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz described the testimonies as “chilling.”
Alberto Nunez Feijoo, leader of the conservative Popular Party and a friend of Iglesias, expressed his surprise at the claims, urging a thorough examination of the facts involved. “We need to know exactly what happened, if anything,” he remarked, advocating against speculation.
About Julio Iglesias
At 82, Julio Iglesias is recognized as one of the most successful Latin artists, boasting over 300 million records sold. He gained fame in the 1970s and 1980s, known for his romantic ballads and collaborations with iconic artists such as Diana Ross and Stevie Wonder.
In earlier interviews, Iglesias embraced his “Latin lover” persona, often discussing his romantic life openly. However, with the recent allegations, his public image faces a critical challenge.
Context of Allegations in Entertainment
The claims against Iglesias come amid a broader movement addressing sexual misconduct in entertainment. Following the #MeToo movement, many high-profile figures have faced similar accusations, resulting in convictions, settlements, or ongoing investigations. Advocates hope this increased visibility will lead to significant changes in how such cases are addressed.
