Commanders Reveal First Renderings of Covered Stadium at RFK Site

The design and location of the new stadium at the historic RFK site are poised to create an exciting urban environment. This project aims to respect the nearby Capitol and monuments while enhancing local connections to entertainment and public transport.

Stadium Design and Community Integration

The stadium’s continuous colonnade aims to integrate public plazas and green spaces. This connection will extend toward the Anacostia River, promoting accessibility for all visitors.

  • New stadium dedicated to year-round events
  • At least 30% of the site will be used for recreation

Economic Impact and Project Costs

Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed gratitude for the joint effort between the Commanders and the architecture firm HKS. She emphasized the project’s goal to create an iconic stadium that recognizes the city’s rich history and skyline.

In April 2022, an agreement was reached between the Commanders and the District of Columbia to proceed with the stadium construction. The estimated cost of the project is around $4 billion. The Commanders will contribute approximately $2.7 billion, with the city covering the remaining costs.

A Historical Return

This stadium marks the franchise’s return to D.C., almost 30 years after its last game at RFK Stadium. The Commanders played their final game at the location on December 22, 1996, before relocating to FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, in 1997.
