Shinjirō Koizumi, Japan’s Defense Minister, visited the Pentagon today for a crucial meeting with U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. This engagement highlights the robust alliance between the two nations.
Strengthening U.S.-Japan Alliance
During the meeting, both leaders praised the enduring partnership between the United States and Japan. Hegseth emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Japan alliance, stating, “Our job—our goal here—is to continue that, to strengthen that in every way possible.” He acknowledged Japan’s recent commitment to increase its defense spending, calling it a significant step appreciated by the U.S.
Commitment to Defense and Peace
Hegseth reiterated that a realistic and practical approach is essential to align the vital national interests of both countries. He believes that conducting realistic military training exercises with the Japan Self-Defense Forces is vital for reestablishing deterrence.
“We talk about America first, yes, but it doesn’t mean America alone,” Hegseth stated. He highlighted the importance of collaboration with allies like Japan in promoting global peace.
Joint Training Session at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall
Prior to their meeting, Hegseth and members of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Regiment participated in a morning physical training session with Koizumi and his delegation at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, Virginia. This joint workout represented the strong bond of the alliance.
Koizumi remarked on the significance of the session, saying, “By Japan demonstrating unwavering results in making every effort and the U.S. providing strong support… I was able to truly feel that bond of the alliance this morning.”
Previous Engagements
This meeting marks the second in-person encounter between Hegseth and Koizumi, following Hegseth’s visit to Japan in October of the previous year. Both leaders are committed to enhancing cooperation and ensuring a secure future for their nations.
