Tarragona Diputación Secures 75-Year Lease for Music Conservatory at Tabacalera

The Diputación and the City Council of Tarragona have officially signed an agreement for a 75-year lease. This lease grants the Diputación a free concession of a section of the historic Tabacalera factory for the new music conservatory. The decision fulfills a long-standing aspiration of the Diputación and enables them to conduct preliminary studies for the project’s bidding process.

Tarragona’s New Music Conservatory at Tabacalera

The space allotted for the conservatory spans 7,168 square meters, encompassing both indoor and outdoor areas. According to preliminary assessments, this sizable location will adequately support the current needs of the Escola i Conservatori de Música de la Diputació, which caters to 445 students.

Key Features of the Agreement

  • The City Council will provide direct access from the public road.
  • Essential services like water, electricity, and communication networks will be available.
  • Improvements to the garden area will also be made for public access before the conservatory’s relocation.

The agreement was announced during a visit by Noemí Llauradó, the President of the Diputación, and Rubén Viñuales, the Mayor of Tarragona. President Llauradó emphasized the site’s suitability for current and future needs. She highlighted that the conservatory, with a 70-year history, has become a cornerstone of musical education in Tarragona.

Mayor Viñuales described the agreement as a strong commitment to culture, education, and urban revitalization. Relocating the conservatory promises to provide an environment that matches the talents of both students and educators. This initiative will also transform the Tabacalera into a vibrant cultural and educational hub after years of closure.

Responsibilities and Future Plans

The signed agreement includes stipulations for the City Council to maintain the remaining unused buildings within the Tabacalera complex. Moreover, efforts will be directed towards ensuring that these spaces are occupied, especially for cultural and educational activities.

The final resolution for the granting of the domain will soon be approved by the Tarragona City Council. Following this, the Diputación will draft the construction project after completing the preliminary studies, all within a year.
