UVic Welcomes New Indigenous VP This Summer
The University of Victoria (UVic) is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Angela Jaime as its new Vice-President Indigenous (VPI). This decision follows a comprehensive national search for candidates. Dr. Jaime will officially begin her role this summer.
Background of Dr. Angela Jaime
Dr. Jaime is a registered member of the Pit River Tribe from Northern California. Currently, she serves as the Vice-Provost for Indigenous Engagement at the University of Saskatchewan (USask), where she has accumulated over 25 years of experience in Indigenous education and academic leadership.
- Experience and Achievements: Dr. Jaime has played a significant role in advancing equity, anti-racism, and social justice in higher education.
- Initiatives at USask: She led the implementation of the Indigenous Strategy known as ohpahatân | oohpaahotaan.
- Policy Development: Dr. Jaime developed USask’s truth policy, deybwewin | tapwaywin | taapwaywin, which contributed to UVic’s Indigenous Citizenship Declaration Policy.
Research Focus
Dr. Jaime’s research primarily focuses on Indigenous women in higher education, as well as topics related to anti-racism, anti-oppression, and decolonization within post-secondary institutions.
Goals as Vice-President Indigenous at UVic
In her new position, Dr. Jaime aims to provide strong Indigenous leadership at UVic. She will support the continuation and enhancement of the Indigenous Plan, ʔetalnəw̓əl̓ | ÁTOL,NEUEL. Additionally, she will work collaboratively with local Nations, Indigenous communities, and the broader university community.
Transition Period
In the interim, Lalita Kines has agreed to continue her role as the Acting Vice-President Indigenous. Kines will ensure continuity and care during this transition period before Dr. Jaime’s arrival.
