Falcons to Interview Kevin Stefanski Again: Source
Kevin Stefanski is set to be the first candidate to have a second interview for the head coaching position with the Atlanta Falcons. This development comes after the team parted ways with Raheem Morris on January 4. The interview is scheduled for Saturday night, as reported by Dianna Russini of El-Balad.
Kevin Stefanski: The Front-Runner
Stefanski, at 43 years old, previously served as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. His tenure spanned six seasons, during which he achieved a record of 45 wins and 56 losses. Known for his emotional stability, he was named NFL Coach of the Year twice, in 2020 and 2023. Additionally, Stefanski led the Browns to two playoff appearances.
Matt Ryan’s Role in the Selection Process
Matt Ryan, who has the distinction of being Atlanta’s all-time leading passer, was appointed as the team’s new president of football operations on January 10. Ryan has taken charge of the head coaching interviews and emphasized the importance of emotional stability in a head coach. In his introductory press conference, he stated:
- “It’s a really difficult job to do, and there’s lots of highs and lows.”
- “Some of the best guys that I was around in those positions were very stable emotionally.”
Stefanski’s Coaching Background
Before his time in Cleveland, Stefanski spent 14 years with the Minnesota Vikings. He began as an assistant and ascended to offensive coordinator. His work there was instrumental in leading the Vikings to the playoffs in 2019, with a scoring offense ranked eighth in the league, averaging 25.4 points per game.
During his time with the Browns, Stefanski dealt with a variety of quarterbacks, including Baker Mayfield and Deshaun Watson. However, the team struggled offensively, ranking 29th in scoring, averaging only 20.31 points per game, and finishing 31st in offensive expected points added.
Other Candidates for the Falcons’ Head Coaching Position
Aside from Stefanski, the Falcons have considered several high-profile candidates for their head coach opening:
- John Harbaugh (former Baltimore Ravens head coach)
- Mike McDaniel (former Miami Dolphins head coach)
- Jeff Hafley (Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator)
- Jesse Minter (Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator)
- Anthony Weaver (Dolphins defensive coordinator)
- Aden Durde (Seahawks defensive coordinator)
Ryan has pointed out that an effective coach must possess a certain level of presence and respect from players. He emphasized that connection with the team is crucial, stating that strong communication does not solely hinge on being the loudest or most charismatic individual during interviews.
