Government Addresses Concerns Over Kenya’s AFCON Hosting Rights

The Kenyan government has addressed growing concerns regarding the country’s capacity to host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). These worries stem from recent comments suggesting inadequate infrastructure in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Kenya Ready to Host AFCON 2027

During a tour in Morocco, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi confirmed Kenya is prepared to meet the infrastructure and operational requirements for the tournament. He noted the supportive results from the 2025 African Nations Championships (CHAN), which Kenya co-hosted with Uganda and Tanzania.

Infrastructure Capacity

  • Kenya’s readiness includes adequate stadium facilities and necessary amenities.
  • Mwangi emphasized improvement lessons learned from CHAN 2025.
  • The country is also focusing on enhancing existing infrastructure, including the ongoing construction of Talanta Stadium.

Mwangi aims to elevate the experience beyond what was offered at CHAN, stating, “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our capabilities.” The recent acknowledgment of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania as hosts was marked by the presentation of the AFCON flag.

Response to Concerns

The skepticism regarding the hosting capabilities of these East African nations was sparked by an Ivorian journalist’s remarks. He suggested that a relocation of the tournament could occur if the infrastructure issues were not resolved. However, CAF President Patrice Motsepe quickly refuted these claims, asserting CAF’s dedication to promoting football development across Africa.

Historical Context

The 2027 AFCON will be significant as it marks the first time the tournament is co-hosted and the first occurrence in the East African region in nearly 50 years. The previous tournament in this region took place in 1976 in Ethiopia. The scheduled dates for the tournament are from June to July 2027.

Fans across East Africa continue to express their support for the event, eager to demonstrate the region’s hospitality and sportsmanship. The government remains committed to ensuring a successful tournament, with ongoing preparations well underway.
