Flames Trade Rasmus Andersson to Golden Knights

In a significant trade, the Calgary Flames have sent defenceman Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights. The deal, confirmed by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, includes multiple assets returning to Calgary.

Details of the Trade

The Flames will receive:

  • Defenceman Zach Whitecloud
  • Prospect Abram Wiebe
  • A first-round pick in 2027
  • A conditional second-round pick in 2027, which could become a first if Vegas wins the Stanley Cup this year

As part of this transaction, the Flames will retain 50% of Andersson’s salary, marking the conclusion of his decade-long tenure with the team.

Rasmus Andersson’s Career Highlights

Rasmus Andersson joined the Flames in 2015 when he was selected 53rd overall in the NHL Draft. Over the years, he established himself as a leading defenceman for the franchise.

Through his career, Andersson played in 584 games, scoring 57 goals and earning 261 points. This season, he has averaged over 24 minutes of ice time per game, contributing 10 goals and 30 assists in 48 games.

The 29-year-old is currently in the last year of a six-year, $27.3 million contract. He carries a cap hit of $4.5 million, and no contract extension is in place following this trade.

Andersson is also set to represent Sweden in the Winter Olympics scheduled next month in Milan.

Insights on Incoming Players

The acquisition of Zach Whitecloud and Abram Wiebe adds depth to Calgary’s roster. Whitecloud, 29, has been with the Golden Knights since 2018, playing a critical role in their 2023 Stanley Cup victory.

He has played a total of 368 NHL games, scoring 23 goals and 55 assists. This season, he has averaged approximately 18:46 of ice time with two goals and five assists to his credit.

Meanwhile, 22-year-old Abram Wiebe is currently playing college hockey for the University of North Dakota. He has posted three goals and 11 assists in 24 games this season and was drafted by Vegas in the seventh round of the 2022 NHL Draft.

Future Picks

This trade also allows the Flames to have both the 2026 and 2027 first-round picks from Vegas. They secured the 2026 pick earlier through the Noah Hanifin trade during the 2023-24 season.
