Storm Forces HRCE to Cancel Classes in Nova Scotia

Weather conditions in Nova Scotia led to significant disruptions on Monday morning. Yellow snowfall warnings remained active, with forecasts predicting an additional five centimeters of snow.

Weather Forecast and Conditions

Environment Canada indicated that snowfall would taper off by mid-morning. Meteorologist Allister Aalders from 95.7 NewsRadio noted that conditions would improve later in the day. Aalders commented, “It’s quiet for the afternoon,” mentioning that a weak disturbance might bring scattered flurries or light snow tonight.

Impact on Education

Due to the harsh weather, all classes were canceled across all Regional Centres for Education in Nova Scotia. This includes:

  • Halifax Regional Centre for Education
  • South Shore Regional Centre for Education
  • Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education
  • Strait Regional Centre for Education
  • Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education
  • Tri-County Regional Centre for Education
  • Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education

Power Outages

The heavy, wet snow caused widespread power outages throughout the province. As of 5:45 a.m., approximately 118,000 customers were left without electricity. Nova Scotia Power anticipates that most residents will have their power restored by noon.

Traffic Disruptions

In addition to the impact on education and power supply, road conditions deteriorated significantly. Highway 118 outbound was closed past Exit 13 due to several large trucks blocking the road. This closure affects routes towards Fall River and Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Traffic is being redirected to Highway 107 towards Waverley Road.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather conditions and to prioritize safety while traveling in these challenging circumstances.
