Severe Winter Cold to Hit Korea: Wind Chill Drops to -20°C
As Korea braces for severe winter cold, temperatures are set to drop significantly. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) forecasts extreme chill beginning on January 20. The anticipated weather will bring wind chill temperatures plunging to around -20°C.
Forecast for Severe Cold Wave
The KMA has issued warnings for a cold wave that will last from January 20 to January 26. Morning temperatures in the inland areas are expected to hit between -15°C and -17°C. In Seoul, temperatures could drop to as low as -17°C, significantly below the average.
Details on Upcoming Weather Conditions
- January 18: Light snow and rain expected, with minimal accumulation of around 1 cm in central and western regions.
- January 19: A sharp drop in temperatures will begin, marking the severe cold front’s arrival.
- January 20: The onset of the most intense cold season, with expectations of sustained low temperatures.
- Wind chill may make it feel 5-10 degrees colder, especially in interior areas.
According to meteorologist Gong Sang-min, the intensity of the upcoming cold will be the most severe of this winter. Past cold events saw temperatures drop below -10°C for only short durations. However, starting January 20, temperatures are expected to remain between -10°C and -13°C for six consecutive days.
Health Guidelines and Safety Precautions
With a prolonged cold wave setting in, the KMA urges citizens to take necessary precautions. Residents should insulate and seal outdoor pipes to prevent freezing. It is advisable to dress warmly, including wearing thermal clothing and protective gear when outside.
Potential for Heavy Snowfall
The KMA also warned of potential snowfall, particularly on January 21-22 and January 24, when cold northwestern winds might bring moisture from the warmer sea. Areas along the western coast could see significant precipitation.
Although mild temperatures are expected around January 26, they will still be below normal for this time of year. Morning lows nationwide are projected to range from -13°C to 0°C.
As winter weather hazards continue to present risks, residents are advised to remain vigilant about the weather and prioritize their safety.
