Buncrana Pier Tragedy: 10th Anniversary Fundraisers Planned
The Buncrana Pier tragedy remains a poignant event in the community’s memory. This year marks its 10th anniversary, a decade since the tragic loss of five family members.
Details of the Tragedy
On March 20, 2016, Sean McGrotty (49), his sons Mark (12) and Evan (8), his partner Louise James’ mother Ruth Daniels (57), and her daughter Jodie Lee Daniels (14) lost their lives. Their vehicle fell into Lough Swilly from a slipway during the incident. The sole survivor was Ríoghnach-Ann McGrotty, who was only four months old at the time.
In a heroic effort, local resident Davitt Walsh swam to the family’s aid. He received baby Ríoghnach-Ann from her father moments before the SUV submerged.
Commemoration Events
This anniversary offers an opportunity for the community to come together. The McGrotty and Daniels families invite everyone to join in honoring the lives of their loved ones—Mark, Evan, Jodie, Ruth, and Sean—and to support the emergency services that helped during that tragic night.
5km Remembrance Walk
A remembrance walk is scheduled for Sunday, March 22, starting at 11 AM. The event will begin at the play park in Buncrana, the last place Mark, Evan, and Jodie were seen playing. The walk will extend towards Ned’s Point, symbolizing reflection, remembrance, and unity.
Refreshments and Donations
Following the walk, refreshments will be served at the RNLI station. This gathering aims to provide a chance to connect, reflect, and share memories of those lost. A suggested contribution is £10 per person or £25 for a family of four, with all proceeds dedicated to supporting the emergency services involved.
