Dolphins Pursue Packers’ Defensive Coordinator Jeff Hafley for Head Coach Role
The Miami Dolphins are reportedly finalizing an agreement to hire Jeff Hafley as their next head coach. This decision marks a significant moment in the franchise’s history, as he would be the twelfth full-time head coach. Hafley has served as the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator for the past two seasons, following a successful four-year tenure as head coach at Boston College.
Jeff Hafley’s Coaching Background
During his time with the Packers, Hafley led a defense that ranked 11th overall, allowing an average of 313.2 yards per game. His defense was also ranked ninth in both rushing defense and Defensive EPA, alongside holding the 11th spot in passing defense. His effective coaching strategies have gained him recognition as a defensive specialist.
Changes in the Dolphins’ Organization
The Dolphins are undergoing substantial changes in their leadership. Chris Grier was dismissed as general manager on October 31, ending his nine-season tenure. Following a disappointing 7-10 season, head coach Mike McDaniel was released shortly after. As part of the restructuring, Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman was brought in as an advisor in the search for a general manager, leading to the appointment of Jon-Eric Sullivan, a former Packers executive.
Sullivan’s hiring ties closely with Hafley, as they worked together during Hafley’s time in Green Bay. The Dolphins’ new head coach will be only the second since 2007 with a defensive background, joining Brian Flores, who led the team in 2019.
Previous Coaching Experience
Before joining the Packers, Hafley worked with the San Francisco 49ers under head coach Kyle Shanahan. He initially joined the 49ers in 2016 and served as the defensive backs coach for Shanahan’s first two years. Following his time in San Francisco, he became Ohio State’s co-defensive coordinator before taking the helm at Boston College.
Future Challenges for the Dolphins
Under Hafley, the Dolphins will face various critical decisions, most notably regarding the starting quarterback situation. Tua Tagovailoa is currently signed through 2028 but faced challenges during the previous season, recording a 6-8 start before being benched. Hafley’s main objective will be to lead the team back to playoff contention, a goal that has eluded the Dolphins since the 2023 season.
Additionally, the Dolphins’ path will be complicated by a strong division that includes the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills, both of which reached the postseason this year. Hafley’s leadership will be vital for revitalizing the Dolphins and overcoming their long-standing playoff drought, which has persisted since the year 2000.
