Giants Star Jung Hoo Lee Freed from CBP Detainment After Document Mix-Up

Jung Hoo Lee, a prominent outfielder for the San Francisco Giants, was released from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detention at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday. His release followed a mix-up concerning travel documents he had forgotten in South Korea.

Background on Jung Hoo Lee

Lee, who is 27 years old, is entering his third season with the Giants after signing a lucrative six-year, $113 million contract in December 2023.

Performance and Career Highlights

  • Batting average: .265 over two seasons
  • Home runs: 10
  • RBIs: 63 in 187 games

Lee faced challenges in his rookie year in 2024 due to a shoulder injury but made a strong comeback in 2025, playing 150 games.

Incident at LAX

Lee was detained briefly while attempting to travel to California for the second of four Giants’ FanFest events, which is scheduled for Saturday in San Ramon. Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s office confirmed that she facilitated his release by collaborating with the Giants and various federal partners.

In a statement, the Giants explained, “Earlier today, Jung Hoo Lee experienced a brief travel issue at LAX due to a paperwork issue. The matter was quickly clarified with the appropriate authorities, and he has since been cleared to continue his travel. We appreciate the professionalism of all parties involved.”

Giants’ Commitment to Growth and Promotion

Earlier this month, a delegation from the Giants, including president of baseball operations Buster Posey and CEO Larry Baer, visited South Korea. Their mission was to promote the organization and celebrate Lee’s contributions. During the visit, they hosted baseball clinics in local high schools and enjoyed Korean barbecue together.

Upcoming Events

The Giants are set to begin spring training in three weeks in Scottsdale, Arizona. Jung Hoo Lee, along with several of his teammates, has also committed to play in the World Baseball Classic scheduled for March.

CBP has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the incident.
