Penguins Strengthen Defense, Sign Young Blueliner Ilya Solovyov

The Pittsburgh Penguins have strengthened their defense by signing young blueliner Ilya Solovyov. The 25-year-old defenseman, standing 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 209 pounds, joined the team just in time for the optional morning skate on Wednesday before their game against the Calgary Flames, the team that originally drafted him in 2020.

Pittsburgh Penguins’ New Addition

Coach Dan Muse praised Solovyov’s strong defensive skills. “He does a good job getting back, finding that first pass, and is hard to play against,” Muse noted. Solovyov also has the ability to join the offensive play when necessary.

Professional Journey

Solovyov began his professional career in North America during the 2021-22 season in the American Hockey League (AHL). The following year, he made his NHL debut with Calgary, playing 10 games. Last season, he appeared in five NHL games primarily with the Calgary Wranglers.

This season, Solovyov has played in 16 NHL games with the Colorado Avalanche, including a stretch of six consecutive games where he scored his first NHL goal on January 10 against Columbus. He commented on his preparation during periods out of the lineup, stating, “I try to keep this momentum and stay positive.”

Filling the Gap

With Caleb Jones injured during his rehab assignment in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas emphasized the need to close this gap. Dubas noted that the organization had closely monitored Solovyov’s development, stating, “He’s a player our personnel side appreciates and believes has good potential.” This signing aligns with the Penguins’ strategy of adding younger talent to their roster.

Future Prospects

  • Age: 25
  • Height: 6’3″
  • Weight: 209 lbs
  • NHL Debut: 2021-22 season
  • First NHL Goal: January 10, 2023

Solovyov is enthusiastic about improving his foot speed and work ethic. He believes this will earn him more playing time and aid in his goal to become a full-time NHL player. “I’m working a lot, and that’s how I earn it,” he said, expressing his determination for future success in the league.
