Vikings Extend Contract of Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores

Brian Flores has secured his position as the Minnesota Vikings’ defensive coordinator with a new contract. ESPN’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported this extension on Wednesday. The Vikings confirmed the agreement shortly after.

Negotiations for this contract extension began last week and reached completion on Wednesday. However, Flores remains a candidate for head coaching positions with the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Defensive Success and Background

If Flores does not secure a head coaching role, he will continue to lead a Vikings defense known for its aggressive tactics. Flores is recognized as one of the league’s top defensive minds. Under his leadership, the defense performed impressively during the 2025 season, finishing seventh in points allowed and third in total yards.

Kevin O’Connell, the head coach of the Vikings, identified re-signing Flores as essential after the season concluded. Flores’ defensive strategies have notably enhanced the performances of key players, including:

  • Harrison Smith
  • Andrew Van Ginkel
  • Josh Metellus

Career Highlights

Flores, 44, earned significant recognition during his long tenure with the New England Patriots from 2004 to 2018, where he won four Super Bowl titles. He then became the head coach of the Miami Dolphins for three seasons, from 2019 until his dismissal after the 2021 season.

In February 2022, he filed a lawsuit against the Dolphins, Denver Broncos, and New York Giants, alleging discriminatory hiring and firing practices. Following this, Flores took a role with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the linebacker coach and senior defensive assistant before joining the Vikings.

With Flores at the helm, expect the Vikings defense to continue its strong performance unless another team offers him a head coaching position. For now, he remains committed to leading the Minnesota Vikings into future seasons.
