Details of the Emissions-Based Parking Charges

The Reading Borough Council has outlined a sliding scale of parking charges based on a vehicle’s emission rating. Vehicles emitting more than 151 grams of CO₂ per kilometer will incur higher fees.

Estimated Impact on Vehicles

  • Approximately 50% of cars are expected to fall into the lowest charge category, facing no increase in parking fees.
  • About 25% of vehicles will move into the first band, resulting in a minor fee increment.

This new charging system applies specifically to on-street parking. It does not affect off-street parking at residential properties.

Emissions Groups and Charges

Six different emissions groups categorize vehicles, including cars and vans. Electric and hybrid vehicles will still incur charges, but at a lower rate compared to more polluting vehicles.

Only petrol and diesel vehicles that exceed the threshold of 151g/km will see increased fees.

Implementation and Approval

The policy for these revised charges was approved by the council’s policy committee in November.

To check a vehicle’s emissions, users can visit the DVLA website and input the vehicle’s registration number. This initiative seeks to improve the health and wellbeing of Reading’s residents.
