Montana’s Iconic Literary Classic Transforms into Opera Adaptation

Norman Maclean’s iconic novella, “A River Runs Through It,” celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Originally published in 1976, this literary classic paints a vivid picture of Montana’s landscapes and explores themes of family, grief, and fly fishing. The story’s profound impact has inspired a new artistic adaptation: an opera premiering this fall in Bozeman.

A River Runs Through It: From Novella to Opera

This adaptation, commissioned by Opera Montana, marks the organization’s first full-length opera. It aims to present Maclean’s timeless tale in a new light. Susan Miller, the General Director of Opera Montana, emphasized the importance of this story to Montanans. “It’s such a meaningful story to Montanans and speaks universally about family and acceptance,” she stated.

The Adaptation Process

The concept for the opera emerged in 2022, during a time when Opera Montana was returning to full productions after the pandemic. Matt Foss, the stage director, mentioned that he had discussions with the Maclean estate long before the project began. His intention was to ensure the adaptation remained faithful to the book’s emotional essence.

Foss, alongside co-librettist Kelley Rourke and composer Zach Redler, worked diligently to translate the novella into operatic form. Rourke noted that keeping the narrative immediate was essential, stating, “Opera’s great strength is visceral emotion.”

Modern Touches

While adapting a literary classic poses challenges, the team successfully infused contemporary elements into the story. They strived to enhance female character roles, a decision that reflects modern values. The story’s central themes remain intact, focusing on family, faith, and the art of fly fishing.

Accessibility for Audiences

Recognizing that opera can be intimidating for newcomers, Miller assured that their production would be welcoming. “You don’t have to dress up, but you can if you want to,” she added, emphasizing their commitment to inclusivity.

Composition and Performers

Zach Redler’s music combines opera and musical theater styles, making it accessible and engaging. The production features 24 musicians and seven principal singers, many with impressive backgrounds in Broadway and the Metropolitan Opera.

  • Baritone Schyler Vargas as Norman
  • Tenor Michael Kuhn as Paul
  • Soprano Christine Taylor Price as Jessie
  • Tenor Ryan Bryce Johnson as Neal
  • Mezzo-soprano Megan Marino as Heidi
  • Mezzo-soprano Phyllis Pancella as Clara
  • Bass-baritone David Pittsinger as John

The premiere will take place at the Ellen Theater in Bozeman in September, with additional performances planned in Missoula. A preview event will occur on May 20 at the National Sawdust Theatre in Brooklyn, New York, showcasing readings from the novella paired with musical selections from the opera.

As John Maclean, son of the author, noted, “The reward is a fresh perspective from a talented cast and writers.” The opera adaptation of “A River Runs Through It” promises to offer audiences a unique and impactful experience.
