UF Band Alcove Charts New Course with Fresh Name
Alcove, the indie rock band formerly known as Sigs Inside, is embarking on a fresh journey. With a new name and evolving sound, the band reflects its growth while aiming for a more professional presence in music.
New Beginnings for Alcove
Formed in 2022, Alcove represents a musical recess, a place for creativity to flourish. The name change comes as the group anticipates new opportunities and compositions. Lead vocalist and guitarist Evan Fleischer, along with fellow band members, believes this transformation will resonate more deeply with their audience.
Graduation Sparks Change
With two members set to graduate this semester, including Fleischer, the timing felt right for a new direction. Fleischer, a 21-year-old mass communications graduate student at UF, emphasizes the band’s desire to create meaningful music that reflects their maturity.
Strong Chemistry and Evolving Sound
The current lineup is the most cohesive yet, according to drummer Reese Watkins. At 21, the finance senior feels that their shared commitment is yielding exceptional results. He stated, “We’re at this peak where everyone’s in the right position.”
Alcove’s diverse musical influences shape their sound. Each member brings distinct styles:
- Evan Fleischer: Influenced by Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath
- Reese Watkins: Draws from pop punk
- Max Addiego: Inspired by Radiohead and Pink Floyd
- Kai Beres: Has a hard rock background
Recording and Releases
The band recently released two singles, “Roses” and “December,” in June 2023 and March 2024, respectively. Watkins took the lead in composing the songs, using in-house recording setups with bassist Beres.
To enhance their sound, they’ve turned to Paul Lapinski at My Platinum Sound in Jacksonville. With over 30 years of experience, Lapinski noted Alcove’s attention to detail and creativity, stating, “It’s something I hadn’t really experienced much.”
Future Plans and Collaborations
Alcove plans to record a new track, “Before I Leave,” during their upcoming sessions in the studio next month. They are also strategizing to re-release their music under the new name on streaming platforms, hoping to have their singles available soon.
This spring, the band is excited to collaborate with Swamp Records as a campaign artist, aiming to expand their media presence and possibly film their first music video.
Community Connection
The band has fostered a robust community in Gainesville, engaging with fans and local venues. Lauren Patton, an architecture senior, reflects on Alcove’s growth and their impact on the music scene. She highlights their ability to connect with various corners of the local community.
Embracing Evolution
As Alcove transitions from Sigs Inside, the members embrace the changes while holding onto the core of their passion. The name change was not merely cosmetic; it represents a commitment to crafting music that leaves a lasting impression.
With optimism for the future, Fleischer shared, “Crafting a brand around something more serious was the goal.” Alcove is not only a new title; it’s a renewed mission for the band.
