Shiffrin Returns to GS Podium After 2 Years; Hector and Moltzan Take Top Spots

Mikaela Shiffrin has made a remarkable return to the World Cup giant slalom podium after a two-year hiatus. The American skier finished third in the GS race held in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czechia, marking a significant moment just weeks ahead of the Milan Cortina Olympics.

Shiffrin Breaks a Two-Year Drought

Shiffrin’s podium finish is her first in giant slalom since January 2024. “It’s amazing for me,” she expressed after the race. She trailed the winner, Sara Hector, by just 0.23 seconds.

Race Highlights

  • Winner: Sara Hector (Sweden)
  • Second Place: Paula Moltzan (USA)
  • Third Place: Mikaela Shiffrin (USA)

Hector, the defending Olympic champion, secured her first victory since January 2025, holding onto her lead throughout the race. “Crossing the finish line first feels really cool,” Hector stated.

Strong U.S. Performance

Paula Moltzan, who finished second, expressed excitement about her performance as well, stating, “It’s inspiring to see the level of my GS skiing with the Olympics approaching.” In addition to Shiffrin and Moltzan, the U.S. team had a strong showing overall, with Nina O’Brien in fifth and AJ Hurt in eighth place.

Shiffrin’s Journey

Shiffrin holds the record for the most career World Cup giant slalom wins with 22. However, she faced setbacks over the past couple of years, including a crash in late 2024 that led to injuries and lingering psychological effects.

Prior to her return to the podium, Shiffrin achieved three fourth-place finishes in the current season. Returning to the venue where she debuted in World Cup racing as a teenager added to the emotional significance of the moment.

Looking Forward to the Olympics

With only three weeks remaining before the Olympic Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Shiffrin’s return to form is timely. The competition level among female skiers is intense, making her performance a promising indicator of what’s to come.

The next event will feature a slalom at the same venue, offering Shiffrin and her competitors another chance to showcase their skills.
