Ohio State Football Taps Ex-NFL Head Coach as Offensive Coordinator: Report
Ohio State football has made a significant move in enhancing its coaching staff. The Buckeyes have appointed Arthur Smith, a former NFL head coach, as their new offensive coordinator. This decision comes after the departure of Brian Hartline, who recently took the head coaching position at South Florida.
Arthur Smith Joins Ohio State Football
Arthur Smith, 43, has an extensive background in professional coaching. His career began at North Carolina in 2006 as a graduate assistant. He transitioned to the NFL, where he held various positions with teams such as Washington, Tennessee, Atlanta, and Pittsburgh.
Coaching Experience
- 2019: Promoted to offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans.
- 2021: Became head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, achieving a record of 21-30 over three seasons.
- January 2024: Fired from the Falcons; subsequently hired as offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- Coached the Steelers to 16th and 15th rankings in points scored in his two seasons with the team.
Smith’s return to the collegiate level comes after more than a decade in the NFL, where he developed a comprehensive understanding of offensive strategies. His experience with various roles, including coaching the offensive line and tight ends, will be invaluable for Ohio State.
Replacing Brian Hartline
The Buckeyes are looking to Smith to fill the void left by Brian Hartline. Hartline’s departure to South Florida prompted head coach Ryan Day to seek out a seasoned NFL mind to guide the offense. This strategy mirrors the move seen earlier when the Buckeyes replaced Jim Knowles, who left as defensive coordinator after the 2024-25 season.
Key Players Returning
Ohio State is set to welcome several key offensive players for the upcoming season. Quarterback Julian Sayin and standout wide receiver Jeremiah Smith are among the notable talents returning to the roster.
This strategic hire of an experienced NFL head coach reflects Ohio State’s commitment to excellence in its football program. With Arthur Smith on board, the Buckeyes aim to enhance their offensive output in a competitive landscape.
