Snowstorm Expected in Southern Quebec Following Cold Spell
Southern Quebec is bracing for a significant snowstorm following a severe cold spell. Between 15 to 20 centimeters of snow are expected from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening. This weather system is influenced by a Colorado low that will skim across the region, impacting areas including Montreal, Montérégie, and Estrie.
Cold Temperatures Persist
Before the snow arrives, residents will experience extreme cold, with wind chill factors making temperatures feel between -25 to -30 degrees Celsius in Montreal on Sunday. The temperature dropped to -37 degrees Celsius overnight, marking the coldest wind chill reported this year. However, conditions will improve on Monday, with temperatures feeling just above -20 degrees Celsius.
Power Outages and Electricity Demand
The cold weather has significantly increased electricity demand, surpassing 40,000 megawatts on Sunday morning. Hydro-Québec reported that over 15,000 households were without power across the province, including around 11,000 in the Montreal area. Most outages on the Island of Montreal occurred in Côte-Saint-Luc, attributed to an incident at the Hampstead power station.
Emergency Measures in Côte-Saint-Luc
- The city has opened a shelter at the Côte-des-Neiges Community Center for residents needing a warm place to stay.
- This shelter was available overnight from Saturday to Sunday and will remain open for Sunday to Monday night.
Flight Disruptions
Travel has also been impacted, with the cold weather causing the cancellation of over 40 flights at Montreal-Trudeau Airport. Travelers are advised to check flight statuses as conditions evolve.
As the snowstorm approaches, it’s crucial for residents to remain cautious, particularly during transportation. Experts warn of potential reduced visibility due to blowing snow, which may increase the risk of accidents. This snow event is set to wind down by Monday evening, bringing a close to this bout of winter weather.
