20 Years of Iconic “Porsche” Trams Revolutionizing Prague’s Transit

In January 2006, Prague welcomed a new mode of transportation—the Škoda 14T tram, affectionately dubbed the “Porsche.” This tram was designed by Porsche Design and promised a modern transit solution for the city.

The Evolution of the Porsche Trams

Initially, the Škoda 14T impressed with its futuristic design and partially low-floor layout, accommodating up to 270 passengers. However, the launch was marred by challenges. Passengers expressed concerns about the narrow aisles and unconventional seating arrangement.

By 2014, technical issues led to the removal of all 60 trams from service. This setback prompted a series of repairs and modifications that ultimately revitalized the fleet.

Improvements Made to the Fleet

• Redesigned interiors to enhance passenger comfort
• Replaced longitudinal seats with transverse seating
• Added new poles and flooring for better accessibility

Following these upgrades, the trams returned to Prague’s streets. Currently, 55 out of the original 60 units remain operational. They primarily operate on routes that feature fewer sharp curves, reflecting the adjustments made to their design.
