UK Prepares for Severe Winds and Rain as Storm Chandra Approaches
The UK is primed for severe weather as Storm Chandra approaches, prompting multiple weather warnings. The Met Office has issued an amber wind warning for Northern Ireland, effective from 05:00 Tuesday to 21:00. This alert pertains to eastern regions, where winds are forecasted to strengthen significantly, producing coastal gales and damaging gusts that could reach speeds of up to 75 mph (120 km/h).
Impact of Storm Chandra
Such high wind speeds are expected to create large coastal waves. These waves may potentially overtop sea walls and promenades, raising concerns for coastal communities.
Rainfall Warnings
In addition to wind warnings, an amber alert for heavy rain has been issued for south-west England. This warning is in effect from 17:00 on Monday to 09:00 on Tuesday. Forecasts predict widespread rainfall amounts of 30-50 mm, with localized areas, especially in south Dartmoor, possibly receiving 60-80 mm.
Flood Risk
The region has already experienced substantial rainfall, which increases the risk of flooding as additional precipitation falls on saturated ground. The Met Office has also issued numerous yellow warnings, the least severe category, across various areas:
- Northern Ireland: Valid from 12:00 Monday to 18:00, warning of persistent rain and a flood risk, with anticipated rainfall of 10-20 mm and up to 40 mm in hilly regions.
- South-west England and Wales: In effect from 15:00 Monday until 12:00 Tuesday, expecting 20-30 mm of rain widely, with up to 80 mm in Dartmoor, Exmoor, and Bannau Brycheiniog.
- South-east England: Valid from midnight Tuesday to midday, highlighting 15-25 mm of expected rainfall, with up to 50 mm on higher ground, such as the Chilterns.
- Northern Ireland (additional warning): On Tuesday from 02:00 to 21:00 for damaging winds, with gusts potentially reaching 70 mph (113 km/h) and an additional 15-25 mm of rain expected, with 40-50 mm in elevated areas.
Authorities urge residents in affected areas to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant as Storm Chandra unfolds.
