Waterloo Region, Guelph Schools Close Monday Amid Winter Storm

Winter weather has prompted school closures in the Waterloo region and Guelph on Monday. The region is facing a significant winter storm that began affecting the area Sunday evening.

School Closures Announcement

Three school boards have made the decision to close all schools for the day: the Waterloo Region District School Board, Upper Grand District School Board, and Wellington Catholic District School Board. The closures are a direct response to hazardous weather conditions caused by the storm.

Winter Storm Details

Environment Canada has issued a yellow weather warning due to expected snowfall of 10 to 20 cm throughout Monday. The warning also highlights reduced visibility due to heavy snow combining with gusty winds from the east, reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h.

Weather Impacts

  • Wind chill temperatures dropping to -25°C in the morning and -19°C in the afternoon.
  • Travel conditions are expected to be challenging, with roads and walkways becoming difficult to navigate.
  • Residents are advised to allow extra time for travel and to be aware of potentially dangerous white-out conditions.

Public Safety Measures

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have urged residents to stay home unless travel is essential. Drivers are advised to adjust their speed according to the weather and road conditions, ensure visibility by using headlights, and maintain safe distances between vehicles.

Warming Centers and Parking Bans

  • The front lobby of Guelph City Hall will serve as a warming center from 7 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday.
  • A winter street parking ban is in effect across Guelph, Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo, and the Township of North Dumfries.

This ban began at various times, with Guelph implementing its restrictions at 7 a.m. Sunday. Non-compliance can lead to higher-cost parking tickets and towing.

Transport Services Affected

The severe winter weather has also disrupted GO train services. The following adjustments have been made:

  • Eastbound trains departing Bramalea are canceled.
  • Westbound trains departing Union Station are also canceled.
  • Hourly service will be maintained for all other trains from the Kitchener station.

Metrolinx is advising commuters to remain vigilant on platforms and in station buildings due to the slippery conditions resulting from the storm.

With continued snowfall anticipated for the coming days, authorities are working to ensure public safety and efficient snow removal in affected areas.
