Galusha and Scharf Embrace Scotties Experience with Teen Daughters

Kerry Galusha has made a significant mark in the sport of curling. Over her illustrious career, the 48-year-old represented the Northwest Territories at 22 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, with her final appearance occurring last year in Thunder Bay, where she played alongside her daughter, Sydney. Now retired from competitive curling, Galusha is dedicated to coaching the next generation of curlers from the North.

Transition to Coaching

Currently, Galusha is coaching three different teams, including the current rink representing Northwest Territories at the ongoing Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Mississauga. She remarked, “It’s been very busy. I have not thrown one rock,” indicating her full commitment to coaching rather than playing. Galusha has embraced this new role, finding joy in guiding her junior teams.

Team Composition

This season’s Northwest Territories team is led by 40-year-old skip Nicky Kaufman, competing in her first Scotties. The team is further strengthened by third Megan Koehler, who is competing for the seventh time. Sydney Galusha, 16, and Ella Skauge, 17, are back on the front end, both participating in their second Scotties after previously finishing with a 3-5 record. The alternate, Brynn Chorostkowski, is also 16 years old.

Challenges in Curling from the North

Galusha highlighted the challenges facing curlers in the Northwest Territories, primarily related to preserving competitive teams. High travel costs and time commitment for curling events outside their home territory represent significant obstacles. Moreover, many promising young curlers leave for education opportunities down south, which further complicates the development of talent.

The Future for Young Curlers

The future of current junior curlers remains uncertain. Galusha mentioned that both Ella Skauge and Brynn Chorostkowski are likely to pursue education outside the North, impacting their curling careers. Sydney is considering joining an Alberta team after graduation, and Galusha is optimistic yet realistic about the potential decline in local talent.

Scharf and the Family Experience at the Scotties

Krista Scharf, skip of the Northern Ontario team, is participating in her 13th Scotties with her 16-year-old daughter, Bella McCarville, as an alternate. This opportunity allows Scharf to experience the championship with her daughter, creating a unique family bonding moment. Bella has already participated in several Under-18 and Under-20 championships, adding valuable experience to the team.

Team Dynamics and Goals

Team Scharf, which includes long-time teammates such as Ashley Sippala, Kendra Lilly, and Sarah Potts, is aiming to return to the playoffs after consecutive seasons without success. Scharf feels the pressure of time, aware that her competitive career is limited, and seeks to maximize the potential of her team this year.

As both Galusha and Scharf navigate their curling journeys, they emphasize the importance of family involvement in sports. Their experiences illustrate the unique blend of competitive spirit and personal connection that define the world of curling.
