Storm Ingrid Devastates Porthpean Beach

Storm Ingrid Devastates Porthpean Beach

Cornwall experienced severe damage due to Storm Ingrid, particularly at Porthpean Beach. The stone ramp and adjoining sea wall suffered extensive destruction, leaving the area in disarray. Videos circulated online showcasing the ramp split in half, with debris strewn across the sand beneath.

Storm Ingrid’s Impact on Porthpean Beach

According to local authorities, the damage to the ramp and sea wall is substantial. Councillor James Mustoe described the scene as one of “absolute devastation.” He noted that the ramp was destroyed at its lower end, while the sea wall experienced significant undermining in multiple areas.

  • Stone ramp severely compromised
  • Adjoining sea wall damaged with holes
  • Tonnes of sand displaced from the beach

Despite these challenges, Mr. Mustoe confirmed that Porthpean Beach remains accessible via the coastal path and steps leading to the beach café. He expressed gratitude towards the Cormac team for their prompt evaluation of the situation.

Weather Conditions Leading to the Damage

Storm Ingrid struck Cornwall and Devon on Friday, January 23, and continued into January 24. The Met Office had previously issued warnings for wind and rain, valid until 2 PM on January 24. However, the warning was later extended until 10 PM.

During this period, the region faced significant tidal flooding, compounded by winds reaching speeds of up to 60 mph. With torrential rain accompanying these winds, the adverse weather conditions contributed to the state of destruction reported across Cornwall.

Assessing the Damage and Next Steps

Addressing the aftermath, Mr. Mustoe indicated that substantial repairs are necessary to restore Porthpean Beach. He also noted the need to report damage to essential infrastructure managed by South West Water, along with the beach café facilities.

The local community remains hopeful for quick recovery efforts to minimize disruptions at this popular beach destination
