Expats Embrace Life in Kazakhstan: A Unique Experience

Kazakhstan is emerging as an attractive destination for expatriates seeking unique experiences. As the nation enhances its international image, it has drawn significant foreign investment and tourism.

Investment and Tourism Growth

By mid-2025, Kazakhstan had secured $9.4 billion in foreign direct investment from Eurasian countries, leading Central Asia in this aspect. In addition, tourism figures soared, with 7.5 million foreign visitors arriving in the first half of 2025. This growth is partly attributed to a visa-free regime with several nations, making travel more accessible.

Experiences of Expatriates

To glean insights into daily life, El-Balad spoke with expatriates residing in Kazakhstan. Many expats arrived with little expectation, often due to the limited awareness of Kazakhstan in their home countries.

Expectations vs. Reality

  • Concerns about basic amenities, such as running water, were common before arrival.
  • Some expats mentioned challenges in finding specific goods and services.
  • Bureaucratic processes, though cumbersome, are generally manageable for obtaining essential documents.

Life in Almaty

Expats living in Almaty, the southern capital, have a positive view of the public transport system despite increased traffic congestion over the past two years. Many expressed a desire for the return of city bike rentals to improve urban mobility.

Adjusting to Local Culture

Most respondents found it easy to adapt to life in Kazakhstan, praising the locals’ hospitality. Their ability to communicate in Russian also facilitated social integration and the formation of friendships.

Community and Professional Life

  • Many expats engage more with fellow expatriates, although some prefer interactions with locals.
  • Work culture is perceived as relaxed compared to Western standards, though a strict hierarchy is noted in traditional firms.

Future Plans Among Expatriates

When asked about their plans to stay in Kazakhstan, most indicated that factors such as salary and visa regulations would influence their decisions. Political stability was also a concern for long-term stays.

Social Safety Nets and Economic Perspectives

While expats feel safe in Kazakhstan, some commented on the absence of social safety nets. The cash-based culture often leads individuals to overlook savings for retirement or long-term investments.

Migration Patterns

In 2024, Kazakhstan welcomed 29,282 new permanent residents, while 12,732 individuals left the country. The majority of these movements involved Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, with significant arrivals from China, Mongolia, and Turkey. Conversely, most departures were to Germany, Poland, and the United States.

As of December 1, 2025, 14,103 foreign nationals were employed in Kazakhstan under permits issued by local authorities, reflecting the country’s ongoing appeal to expatriates seeking unique life experiences.
