José Abud Flores Arrested for Challenging Layda Sansores

José Abud Flores, former rector of the Autonomous University of Campeche (UAC), has made serious allegations against the state government led by Layda Sansores. He claims that the government is attempting to undermine university autonomy to ensure his removal from office. Abud Flores described the official stance on university autonomy as “cavernous and deceitful,” arguing that the government’s motives are rooted in political manipulation.

Accusations Against the State Government

Abud Flores asserted that the government perceives him as a threat due to his refusal to comply with directives from higher authorities. He stated, “I was considered an uncomfortable person. They need someone obedient who will follow their orders.” This tension arises in light of upcoming elections, specifically the 2027 gubernatorial race, which Abud Flores believes the government aims to influence by controlling university resources.

Financial Concerns and University Autonomy

Recently, the Campeche government secured a loan of one billion pesos, while the UAC operates on an annual budget of approximately 1.2 billion pesos. Abud Flores expressed concern over the potential misuse of these funds, questioning whether the intended purpose was to ‘buy off’ support.

  • Government Loan: 1 billion pesos
  • UAC Annual Budget: 1.2 billion pesos

Abud Flores emphasized his commitment to defending university autonomy. He stated that true governance and academic direction should be internally managed, without external interference. “All actions taken by the university should benefit the larger community,” he added.

Previous Interference Attempts

Two years ago, the local congress, dominated by the ruling party, attempted to create a “Traveling Congress” aimed at entering university classrooms. Abud Flores described this as an extreme measure, saying it represented an effort to indoctrinate students about the congress’s responsibilities.

Pressure on Other University Leaders

The situation extends beyond UAC, affecting other institutions as well. Abud Flores discussed ongoing pressure facing Sandra Martha Laffon Leal, the rector of the Autonomous University of Carmen (Unacar). She has reported intimidation tactics aimed at forcing her resignation, which Abud Flores associates with the political ambitions of a gubernatorial candidate in Ciudad del Carmen. He concluded that the university is being used as a tool against her.

As events unfold, the future of university autonomy in Campeche hangs in the balance, as Abud Flores and others champion the cause against governmental overreach.
