Apple Enhances AirTag Features After 5-Year Wait

Apple has launched an upgraded version of its popular Bluetooth tracker, the AirTag, marking a significant development in user experience after two years since the original debut. The second-generation AirTag offers several enhancements while maintaining its affordable price of $29 for a single unit and $99 for a four-pack. This new model is available for purchase starting today.

Enhanced Features of the Second-Generation AirTag

The second-gen AirTag is powered by the advanced U2 Ultra Wideband chip, which Apple has integrated into its latest iPhone and Apple Watch models. This chip enhances the Precision Finding feature, allowing users to locate the AirTag with a range up to 1.5 times greater than before. With visual, audio, and haptic feedback, users can easily be guided to their AirTag using their iPhone.

Compatibility and User Experience

For the first time, Precision Finding is now supported on the Apple Watch Series 9 and later models, including the Apple Watch Ultra 2. In addition to this, the second-generation device is designed to be 50 percent louder than its predecessor, making it audible from twice the distance. A new chime enhances the user experience further.

  • 50% louder sound
  • New chime for better notifications

Battery and Software Requirements

Despite the upgrades, the battery life remains consistent at over a year, and it continues to be user-replaceable. New users need an iPhone or iPad running iOS 16 and an active Apple Account signed into iCloud to utilize the second-gen AirTag. The device is still fully integrated with Apple’s Find My feature, which leverages a vast network of Apple devices for effective tracking.

AirTag’s Share Item Location Feature

Apple has also introduced the Share Item Location feature. This allows users to share the location of a missing item with participating airlines, currently supported by 36 airlines, with plans to expand to 50 in the near future. This feature is particularly useful for travelers looking to locate lost luggage.

Safety Features and Environmental Responsibility

The updated AirTag includes enhanced safety features designed to protect user privacy. If an AirTag is unknowingly placed in someone’s bag, their iPhone or Android will send a notification alerting them to the presence of an “unknown tracker.”

In line with Apple’s commitment to sustainability, the second-generation AirTag is made from 85 percent recycled plastic. It incorporates 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in its magnets and features recycled gold plating in its circuit boards. The packaging is entirely fiber-based paper, demonstrating Apple’s ongoing dedication to environmental responsibility.

Accessory Compatibility

The second-generation AirTag retains the same form factor as its predecessor, ensuring compatibility with existing accessories. Apple has also released a new version of its official Key Ring accessory, crafted from its innovative FineWoven material, designed to coordinate with the FineWoven iPhone 17 case.

As Apple continues to enhance its AirTag offerings, these improvements reflect a commitment to user experience, safety, and sustainability.
