WWF Portugal Opens Applications for Green Heart of Cork+ Forestry Award
WWF Portugal has announced the opening of applications for the Green Heart of Cork+ (GHoC+) Forestry Award. This annual initiative, conducted in partnership with FSC® Portugal, aims to support sustainable cork oak management while promoting biodiversity conservation. The total prize pool amounts to at least €9,000, which will be distributed among selected candidates.
Application Process and Key Dates
The application process is straightforward. Candidates must submit an online form. The evaluation of submissions is scheduled for April, with winners to be announced in June.
Categories of the Green Heart of Cork+
The GHoC+ award includes three distinct categories:
- GHoC+ Classic: Recognizes responsible cork oak management with a positive impact on biodiversity, especially in aquifer recharge areas.
- GHoC+ Certification: Encourages the expansion of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified management practices of cork oak and holm oak.
- GHoC+ Eco: Acknowledges FSC-certified properties implementing advanced practices that enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Evaluation Criteria
Several factors influence the evaluation in all categories. These include:
- Geographic criteria: Natural characteristics of the areas.
- Active ecosystem management: Responsible practices in forest stewardship.
- Social criteria: Working conditions and relationships with local communities.
Impact Since Inception
The Green Heart of Cork+ initiative has been operational since 2011. It focuses on conserving the world’s largest cork oak expanse, located on the left bank of the Tejo River. Recently, the program has been expanded to cover the entire country of Portugal.
Since its launch, the GHoC+ has awarded a total of 45 prizes, disbursing €79,000 for ecosystem services to landowners who practice sustainable forestry. This initiative significantly contributes to preserving the cork oak system, an essential component of the landscape.
