Multiple Victims in Shooting: Mistissini Community Under Lockdown
A tragic shooting incident in Mistissini has left two individuals dead, prompting a lockdown of the Cree community in Northern Quebec. The local police, Eeyou Eenou Police Force, alongside the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), are investigating the matter. The shooting is suspected to be linked to organized crime, described by authorities as a possible settling of accounts.
Details of the Incident
Community Chief Michael Petawabano announced the situation via Facebook early Thursday morning. He noted the severity of the shooting, which resulted in “multiple deaths.” The SQ’s spokesperson, Hugues Beaulieu, indicated that police received reports of gunfire on Riverside Street in the village shortly before 9 PM on Wednesday.
Emergency Response
Upon arrival, officers discovered a vehicle containing two men in their thirties, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, their deaths were confirmed shortly after they were transported to a local health facility. According to Beaulieu, while the exact details are still being confirmed, the circumstances surrounding the incident suggest strong ties to organized crime, alleviating concerns about an active shooter in the community.
Community Lockdown
The lockdown remains in effect as of the latest updates. Approximately 4,000 residents have been instructed to remain indoors while all public buildings, including schools, have been closed. Access to and from the Cree territory is restricted.
Community Response
In his Facebook message, Chief Petawabano expressed deep sorrow for the losses experienced by families impacted by this tragedy. He urged everyone in the community to remain calm and fully cooperate with police during the ongoing investigation. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
