F1 2026 Shakedown: Key Developments on Day Four Revealed

The fourth day of the 2026 Barcelona Formula 1 shakedown unveiled significant developments in the teams’ preparations for the upcoming season. Mercedes continued to dominate the testing sessions, while Aston Martin faced challenges before finally hitting the track.

Mercedes Takes the Lead

Mercedes showcased impressive performance throughout the shakedown. Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell completed a total of over 90 laps on the previous day. On Thursday, the duo focused on long runs along with shorter stints to fine-tune various power unit modes. Russell set an unofficial fastest lap time of 1m16.6s.

Mercedes has effectively utilized its three test days in Barcelona, resulting in the highest lap count among all teams with its W17 car. The reliability of the car has also garnered positive feedback from drivers. Antonelli expressed enthusiasm about their performance, stating, “We go to Bahrain testing with high confidence and high hopes.”

Aston Martin’s Late Entry

Aston Martin made its late entrance to the shakedown, arriving at the track with its AMR26 car after a prior delay. Lance Stroll took the wheel, managing only five laps during the final hour of the day. This car features a distinct sidepod and engine cover design that sets it apart from competitors.

Stroll encountered a setback, bringing out a late red flag when his car halted just minutes before the session ended. Fernando Alonso is anticipated to drive the Honda-powered car on the final day of testing.

McLaren Faces Fuel System Issues

Oscar Piastri piloted the new McLaren MCL40, taking over from defending champion Lando Norris. Piastri completed 48 laps before a fuel system issue forced him into the garage. Despite the interruption, he commented positively about the new car and expressed confidence in the team’s efforts to resolve the problem.

McLaren’s technical director, Mark Temple, acknowledged the complexity of the MCL40 and mentioned the decision to investigate the issue thoroughly before resuming the testing.

Notable Performances and Coverage

Lewis Hamilton returned to his Ferrari SF-26, completing 85 laps in dry conditions, despite a minor setback with an early spin. Liam Lawson also participated, driving the Racing Bulls’ VCARB 03.

Several teams, including Alpine, Audi, Haas, and Red Bull, did not participate in Thursday’s session. Red Bull is expected to return on Friday after obtaining spare parts to address damage incurred from an earlier crash.
