Cold Temperatures and Snow Alter Clash Forecast and Race Format
As NASCAR gears up for its preseason Clash in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, weather conditions are influencing race preparations. This annual event will be impacted by extremely cold temperatures and a potential snowfall of up to 12 inches.
Weather Conditions Affecting NASCAR Clash
This year’s Clash, taking place on Sunday at 6 p.m. ET, faces challenges due to the winter storm watch in effect through 1 p.m. ET. Forecasts predict that temperatures may dip into the teens, prompting discussions about the viability of racing under such conditions.
NASCAR officials have confirmed that racing can proceed in cold weather, as tire performance on the quarter-mile Bowman Gray Stadium track should remain adequate. However, snow or ice could pose significant issues.
Race Schedule Changes
- Saturday’s on-track events have been postponed.
- The Clash will now be a one-day program on Sunday, starting with practice at 2 p.m. ET.
Race officials will need to assess snow accumulation over the weekend to determine the feasibility of racing. If conditions remain adverse, NASCAR is prepared to delay the event and reschedule it for the next viable day.
Modified Race Format
Due to the weather-related changes, the traditional race format has also been adjusted:
- Drivers will participate in three practice sessions divided into three groups.
- Qualifying will determine the starting lineup for the main event and the last chance qualifier.
- The heat races originally scheduled for Saturday will not take place.
- A last-chance qualifier, consisting of 75 laps, will be held on Sunday to offer two additional spots in the main event.
- The final spot will go to the highest-ranked driver not qualified, with Kyle Larson being guaranteed entry.
The main event will consist of 200 laps, with a compulsory midway break at Lap 100. Notably, only green-flag laps will count towards the total, and the race finale must conclude under caution.
Previous Year’s Winner
Chase Elliott emerged victorious during last year’s Clash, adding additional intrigue to this year’s competition as drivers prepare to battle under challenging conditions.
