Dollarama Sells $80 Knives for Just $5: A Shopping Frenzy

In a recent shopping frenzy, customers flocked to Dollarama stores across Québec for an astonishing deal on kitchen knives. Re-Generation brand stainless steel knives, normally priced at $80 on the manufacturer’s website, were available for just $5 in-store. The buzz was palpable, with a cashier at the Dollarama on Mount Royal Avenue remarking, “It’s chaos.”

High Demand for Low Prices

Reports from the Agency QMI indicated that many customers were eager to purchase multiple knives at once. During a visit on Thursday, the supply was dwindling, with only two bread knives remaining and no chef’s knives left at one location. However, a Dollarama on Saint-Laurent Street, near Avenue des Pins, still had a dozen chef’s knives available.

Unbelievable Value

The allure of the knives was not just their low price. A cashier pointed out that the $5 price tag placed them among the more expensive items in the store. According to the Re-Generation website, both the chef’s knife and the bread knife sell for approximately 49 euros, equating to nearly $80 Canadian.

These unique knives are not subject to restocking, and store managers confirmed that once the current inventory is sold, no more will be available.

Positive Reviews from Chefs

Local chefs have praised the knives, noting their quality. William Gauvin, a chef at Le Terminal restaurant, tested one by slicing a French shallot and remarked, “You wouldn’t be disappointed paying $50 for it.” Meanwhile, Chef Max l’Affamé, who boasts nearly 70,000 Instagram followers, posted a favorable review after testing the knife on a tomato. He stated, “I can cut very finely, no problem. A very positive verdict. It’s a $5 well spent, especially for students or for the cottage.”

Marketing or Liquidation Strategy?

There is some debate over how Dollarama can sell these knives at such a low price. The corporate office affirmed the authenticity of the products, explaining via spokesperson Lyla Radmanovich that favorable procurement conditions sometimes allow for competitive pricing. Inventory can vary significantly between locations, and demand is often high.

Store managers speculated on two potential reasons for the low pricing: a clearance sale due to a potential store closure or a strategy to raise brand awareness. One manager highlighted that Dollarama’s extensive network of stores enables such deals.
