Fresh Snow Graces Big White Amid Incoming Warm Weather Concerns

Big White Ski Resort has welcomed new snowfall amidst worries about an upcoming warm spell. Just overnight, the resort recorded eight centimeters of fresh snow, which is a boost for the ski conditions. However, the forecast doesn’t look promising, with temperatures expected to rise significantly next week.

Weather Update and Forecast

Currently, temperatures at Big White are around -2°C. Meanwhile, Vancouver is expected to hit 13°C, and Big White could see highs of 9°C next week. These rising temperatures could affect the quality of snow just ahead of BC Family Day, which falls on February 16.

Resort Conditions and Safety

Michael Ballingall, vice president of Big White, describes the new snow as significant but notes that it is not the typical Okanagan “champagne powder.” He advises skiers and snowboarders to stick to groomed runs to ensure safety. “There’s still lots of stuff underneath this eight centimeters that could pose risks,” he cautioned.

Upcoming Events at Big White

  • Para World Cup event this weekend
  • BC Family Day on February 16
  • President’s Day celebrations
  • Olympic Games in February

This weekend’s Para World Cup event serves as a crucial qualifier for athletes aiming for a spot in the upcoming Paralympic Games. The atmosphere at the resort is set to be vibrant as it transforms into a mini Olympic hub.

Community and Atmosphere

Ballingall stated that the village center and the Happy Valley day lodge become lively spaces that celebrate Canadian culture during major events. He expressed excitement for the return of tourists, noting, “We’re completely sold out with destination skiers arriving from around the world.”

With the new snow and upcoming festivities, Big White anticipates busier conditions this weekend compared to last. “Get there early and stay on the groomed runs,” Ballingall advised, as the parking lot is expected to fill quickly.

As Big White prepares for a busy month, the community is excitedly rallying around Canadian Olympian Tess Critchlow, who is set to compete in her third Olympics. The resort is poised for an energetic atmosphere and thriving conditions for skiers and snowboarders alike.
