Elks Release QB Ford, Commit to Fajardo for 2026 Season
The Edmonton Elks have made a significant shift in their quarterback lineup for the 2026 CFL season. They have released Canadian quarterback Tre Ford and are committing to Cody Fajardo as their starting quarterback.
Quarterback Changes in Edmonton
Tre Ford, a 27-year-old from Niagara Falls, Ontario, had a challenging season. He began 2025 as the Elks’ starting quarterback but struggled with a 1-4 record. This led to the team’s decision to replace him with Cody Fajardo.
Fajardo was acquired from the Montreal Alouettes in December 2024 after losing his starting spot to rising star Davis Alexander. During the remainder of the 2025 season, Fajardo posted a record of 6-7, accumulating 3,408 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
Career Highlights of Tre Ford
- Selected in the first round (eighth overall) of the 2022 CFL Draft.
- In 60 career games with the Elks:
- Passed for 4,651 yards
- Completed 29 touchdowns
- Recorded 19 interceptions
Cody Fajardo’s Experience
Now 33 years old, Fajardo is entering his 11th season in the CFL. He notably earned MVP honors in the 2023 Grey Cup, leading the Montreal Alouettes to a 28-24 championship victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The commitment to Fajardo follows the Elks’ recent signing of star receiver Austin Mack, who played a vital role in the team’s offensive strategy/ last season.
Statement from the Organization
Ed Hervey, the Elks’ general manager, emphasized that the decision to release Ford was not a reflection of his abilities or character. “We believe a fresh start is in the best interests of both Tre and the organization,” Hervey stated. He highlighted that this move aligns with the Elks’ goal of building a competitive football team for 2026.
Other Notable CFL Transactions
In addition to the Elks’ roster changes, several other teams have made significant moves:
- The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed defensive back DaMarcus Fields to a two-year contract extension.
- Fields achieved career-highs in the 2025 season, including 57 defensive tackles and two interceptions.
- The Hamilton Tiger-Cats re-signed defensive back Destin Talbert, who has been with the team since 2024.
- The B.C. Lions re-signed wide receiver Hergy Mayala, who has played 72 CFL games and has a solid record.
These developments indicate promising changes as teams prepare for the upcoming CFL season.
