NTSB Issues Preliminary Findings on Greg Biffle Plane Crash

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently released preliminary findings concerning the tragic plane crash on December 3 that resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, including former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle. The report provides insights into the flight and possible mechanical issues, but a definitive cause of the crash has not yet been established.

NTSB Preliminary Findings on Greg Biffle Plane Crash

The crash occurred shortly after takeoff from Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina. The Cessna Citation 550 went down nine minutes into its flight, landing approximately 1,030 feet short of the runway and igniting in flames.

Casualties and Background

  • Victims included:
    • Greg Biffle
    • Cristina Grossu (Biffle’s wife)
    • Emma Biffle (age 14)
    • Ryder Biffle (age 5)
    • Dennis Dutton (primary pilot)
    • Jack Dutton (co-pilot, Dennis’s son)
    • Craig Wadsworth (Biffle’s employee)
  • The group was en route to Florida, with a planned stop in Bradenton to visit influencer Cleetus McFarland.

Pilot Qualifications and Flight Issues

The flight was led by Dennis Dutton, with Jack Dutton serving as co-pilot. Jack had accumulated 175 flying hours but lacked certification for co-piloting the aircraft. According to NTSB regulations, a certified co-pilot should have been present.

During takeoff, Biffle, who was seated in the rear, noticed that the left engine was producing more power than the right. His experience as a certified pilot led him to assist the crew in diagnosing flight issues as they encountered a low cloud ceiling at 1,200 feet.

Instrument Concerns

The preliminary investigation indicates a malfunction with the altitude indicator and potential issues with additional flight instruments on the left side. However, there was no sign of uncontained engine failures for either engine. While a cockpit voice recorder was available, the quality of the audio was poor, necessitating extensive efforts to decipher parts of the recording.

Tributes and Legacy

Greg Biffle, a NASCAR icon with 19 Cup victories and championships in both the Truck and Xfinity Series, will be honored throughout the 2026 NASCAR season. In memory of her husband, Biffle’s family established the Biffle Family Legacy Impact Fund in collaboration with the Foundation for the Carolinas. This fund aims to aid those in need, reflecting Biffle’s commitment to community service.

Throughout his career, Biffle earned recognition for his humanitarian efforts, notably during Hurricane Helene, when he used his helicopter for rescue missions and to deliver essential supplies.
