Patrick Dempsey Shares Emotional Update on Eric Dane’s ALS Battle
Patrick Dempsey has shared an emotional update regarding his former Grey’s Anatomy co-star, Eric Dane, who is battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This debilitating condition has made it increasingly difficult for Dane, 53, to participate in projects like Dempsey’s new show, Memory of a Killer.
Challenges in Collaboration Due to ALS
Dempsey, 60, recently explained how the progression of Dane’s ALS symptoms has hindered their plans for collaboration. “I spoke to him a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, the progression of his disease made it virtually impossible,” he shared in an interview with Parade.
Dane, known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, publicly announced his ALS diagnosis in April. He has candidly discussed his experiences with the disease and even portrayed a character with ALS on NBC’s Brilliant Minds.
Continuing to Support a Friend
Despite the challenges posed by ALS, Dempsey expressed his commitment to staying in touch with Dane. “I think he’s been incredibly courageous in the face of this horrible disease,” he remarked. Dempsey praised Dane for his intelligence and sense of humor, calling the ALS diagnosis “heartbreaking” for Dane and his family.
Understanding ALS
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. According to the ALS Association, early symptoms can include muscle twitches, cramps, and speech difficulties.
- Muscle twitches in arms, legs, or other areas
- Cramps and stiffness
- Slurred or nasal speech
Dane’s Determination to Continue Acting
Following his diagnosis, Dane expressed a strong desire to continue his acting career. In a June interview on Good Morning America, he stated, “I don’t think this is the end of my story.” He emphasized the importance of spending time with his family while managing his health.
During the interview, he disclosed that he had lost function on his right side and feared the loss of control over his left hand, confirming the severity of his condition.
Support from Family
In addition to Dempsey’s support, Dane’s wife, Rebecca Gayheart, has been vocal about her husband’s care needs. Recently, she revealed in an essay for The Cut that Dane required round-the-clock nursing care. Gayheart detailed her struggles with the insurance system to obtain necessary support for Dane.
“I made it my mission,” she wrote of her efforts to secure full-time care for Dane. Together, they are navigating the challenges posed by ALS while maintaining hope and positivity in their lives.
