Jefferson Critiques Vikings’ QB Performances Against McCarthy and Wentz
The Minnesota Vikings encountered a challenging 2023 season, finishing with a record of 9-8. This performance was heavily influenced by the team’s inconsistent quarterback play. J.J. McCarthy, the starter, struggled throughout the season, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns—12 to 11—and ranking 40th out of 42 qualified quarterbacks in passer rating.
Quarterback Struggles
Last season, the Vikings enjoyed more success, ending with a 14-3 record under former quarterback Sam Darnold. Darnold left in free agency to join the Seattle Seahawks, currently in contention for the NFC title. The Seahawks signed him to a lucrative three-year contract worth $100.5 million.
In an interview with USA Today’s Prince Grimes, Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson shared insights about Darnold’s potential impact on the team’s performance. He remarked on the familiarity Darnold had with the team dynamics and playbook, suggesting that with Darnold at the helm, Minnesota’s season might have had a different outcome.
Darnold’s Performance and McCarthy’s Injury
Jefferson expressed confidence that the Vikings could have reached the Super Bowl with Darnold leading the offense. Darnold had a standout season in 2022, amassing 35 touchdowns and 4,319 yards. He followed up with another solid outing this season, passing for 4,048 yards and 25 touchdowns.
McCarthy, selected 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, faced significant setbacks due to injuries. He missed his rookie season after suffering a torn meniscus in a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders. In 2023, McCarthy dealt with multiple injuries, including a high-ankle sprain, a concussion in Week 12, and a hairline fracture in his right hand. As a result, he missed seven games during the season.
Mixed Results from Multiple Quarterbacks
In addition to McCarthy, the Vikings utilized Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer as starting quarterbacks. Collectively, the trio managed just 17 touchdowns while throwing 21 interceptions, leading to a disappointing offensive performance. The Vikings finished 26th in the league in scoring, despite a defense that allowed the third-fewest yards per play.
Management Changes Ahead
As the Vikings reflect on a tumultuous season, they have made a significant organizational change. The team parted ways with general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah after four seasons. Rob Brzezinski, the executive vice president of football operations, has stepped in as interim general manager leading up to the draft. The Vikings now face the challenge of regrouping and strategizing for a more successful 2024 season.
