Newfoundland Storm Shuts Schools, Stops Bus Services

Newfoundland is currently facing severe weather conditions as a powerful storm brings heavy snowfall and high winds to the region. Schools in eastern and central Newfoundland have been closed for safety due to the extreme weather.

Impact of the Storm on Newfoundland

The storm is expected to drop between 30 to 50 centimeters of snow in various parts of the province. Wind speeds could exceed 100 kilometers per hour, further worsening conditions.

Closure of Services

St. John’s, the capital city, is effectively paralyzed. Municipal services and structures are closed, and all bus routes were suspended on Monday morning. This includes:

  • Provincial courts
  • Supreme courts
  • Family courts
  • Appeals courts

Weather Forecast and Warnings

Environment Canada has issued an orange snowfall warning. As of 6:30 a.m., approximately seven centimeters of snow had already accumulated in St. John’s. Meteorologist Veronica Sullivan from the Gander Weather Office confirmed, “You folks are right in the middle of the storm right now.”

In addition to St. John’s, other areas are also bracing for significant snowfall:

  • Clarenville: Up to 45 cm of snow expected
  • Bonavista Peninsula: Approximately 35 cm of snow anticipated with strong winds

As temperatures are predicted to rise throughout the day, the weather may lead to “wet and dense” conditions, heightening the need for caution in the region.
